Where does one start in eulogizing an icon like Mr. Gomez? To start with he never thought of himself as being special. All that he accomplished in his storied career as the “Music Man of Cupertino High” to hear him tell it was merely “Doing my job”. The true joy he got was seeing his students accomplish what they did, His genius was getting them to do more than they thought possible and not burn them out during this process. On the contrary he often planted the seed for even greater achievements in music for the rest of their lives. Even more importantly most of his students would retain a love of music for the rest of their lives. That I suppose is the biggest payoff for any teacher whatever they teach be it music, science, physical fitness, wood working, literature, history or whatever.
Mr. Gomez’s legacy will live on as his former students inspire others and they in turn repeat this process. All who came in contact with him have a story to tell, all who knew him well have many. My guess is a book will soon be written entitled “The Life and Times of Mr. Bob Gomez Just Doing My Job”.I know I’ll buy it. I might even write it. Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if everybody could just "do their job" like he so amazingly did? |
